Music on Cruise Ships - Alcohol

Dear musicians,

Getting drunk on a cruise ship is not a good idea. Now, of course, there's lots of drinking on ships and whether you get in trouble for it depends on the various cruise lines' policies, but also on the people that are supposed to enforce these rules on the ships.

One important thing to keep in mind is this. When you get hired as an individual performer, you'd obviously be affecting your own career only in case you get fired for alcohol. However, if you are in a band, you could possibly get everyone else in trouble. The policy at some cruise lines is that if one person of a band gets fired, the entire band will have to go home.

We recently had a case where a reliable musician, a person that never caused any trouble, never touched alcohol, got drunk while celebrating a band mate's birthday. Unfortunately, he got caught by a security guard, with alcohol levels above the limit and was consequently fired. Unfortunately, the entire band that he was a bandleader of, also got fired.

You might disagree with this reasoning, but the fact is that if the cruise line decides to fire the entire band, there isn't much you can do about it, whether you agree or not. Some cruise lines pay more attention to the final product than others. By that I mean, the cruise lines want the bands to appear on the ships exactly as they appeared in the audition video they've submitted to get the job in the first place. The thinking is that "we hire a specific product, and if a person gets fired, the quality of that product changes and it's not a given that that quality can be re-established by just replacing that one musician".

We've heard that many times and it's a valid point. Some other cruise lines may prefer to replace that person regardless of whether the quality suffers or not. They may prefer to do so in order to save the costs of flying an entire band home and flying out a new one (provided they can even find a new band on short notice).

So, there's different philosophies amongst these cruise lines in this regard.

Another point to consider is that if you get fired for being drunk, you will never work for that cruise line again. Now, I'm sure there are plenty of musicians that got fired for alcohol and got rehired by the same company later. I'm sure that's true, but again, it depends on what company this is, how bad the situation was, and whether they want to make exceptions or not.

Some cruise lines let you write in to the human resources department to plead your case, but chances of them actually reversing the decision not to hire you again are very low.

It's a real delicate subject. I don't want to be a hypocrite and tell everyone to avoid alcohol at all costs, simply because I've been on many ships, been drunk on many occasions, and I know very well that parties will happen for sure, but it may be worth thinking about how much you're going to drink and how important a career at sea is to you.

I'm saying this because some of the people that can now no longer work for their favorite cruise lines are struggling to make a living and keep calling us repeatedly begging for work.

At the very least, it's important to be aware of what could happen to you. How you handle yourself is ultimately your decision.
jimmysax,

Check out this forum topic: http://www.oceanbound.ca/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1176279034

Keep in mind that using cel phones at sea is a new development for cruise lines and there are many changes happening. Some cruise lines are testing some of the newest equipment on some of their ships before they roll out a system fleet wide. So, it's difficult to stay up-to-date with all of these changes.

Music on Cruise Ships - Backing Track Library

Dear Musicians,

Tim Redman, bandleader of his band "Retrospect" has put together a library of backing tracks for songs that him and his band have been performing on cruise ships for a number of years. Tim is offering to sell these backing tracks to those that are interested in adding relevant songs to their repertoire.

As you may know, most cruise lines prefer to hire smaller cover bands rather than larger ones. If you're hired as a 4-piece band, it's difficult to make the songs sound full and complete. These backing tracks will help you achieve that.

The tracks were produced on a Macbook Pro using Logic 9, a Motu 828 FireWire audio interface, with various synth plug-ins. The tracks have keyboard parts on them. Some have percussion, and some have extra guitar parts. Tim can send more samples if required, as well as samples of specific songs if needed.

They're $9 each. Tim may also be able to create new tracks for you for $15 each.

Attached is a list of backing tracks and you can find samples of some of the tracks by clicking on the link below. If you're interested in buying any of the tracks, contact us at info@oceanbound.ca with the subject "Tim Redman - Backing Tacks" and we'll get you in touch with him.

Click here to hear the samples.
Music on Cruise Ships - Dreadlocks be gone

Dear Musicians,

Just a quick note to inform you that Celebrity Cruises is now no longer tolerating dreadlocks. If you show up at the ship with dreadlocks you can either 1. Have them cut off right then and there or 2. Go home.

I'm not kidding. This is a new policy that's in place as of now.

Marco.

General Music Discussions - Music Education "State of the Nation" study

Well BoneBarbarian,

This is exactly what I'm talking about. There are a lot of musicians that are getting a $40,000-a-year education to end up getting the same gigs that you're getting without the education.

It's relatively easy to get a degree, you don't really need to have a lot of talent to achieve that (9 out of 10 bachelor's and master's degree students fail our audition!), but those that get a degree feel like they have to get a job in the music industry now that they have spent all this money on a degree. But this absolutely over-saturates the market and thus a lot of musicians struggle.

Granted, you couldn't possibly land a high paying gig in a Symphony orchestra without a degree since it's all about papers with them.
